Building the food transparency commons together

Open Food Facts is a citizen project of general interest, built by tens of thousands of volunteers worldwide who believe everyone has the right to know what's in their food. Since 2012, we've grown from a small community project into a global database used by millions of people and thousands of apps and research projects—all while maintaining our independence and commitment to the common good.

Our independence: A cornerstone of trust

We are strictly independent from the food industry. To ensure we remain an unbiased source of information, we do not accept any financial support from companies or foundations connected to the food industry. This independence is not negotiable—it's what allows us to provide objective, transparent information that truly serves the public interest, free from commercial influence or conflicts of interest.

While we refuse industry funding, we warmly welcome collaboration with food producers who want to contribute to transparency by automatically integrating data and photos of their products into our open database. Transparency benefits everyone: consumers, honest producers, and public health.

Every contributor is a partner

You are a partner of Open Food Facts. Whether you've scanned a single product, made a monthly donation of 2 euros, or contributed code to our platform—you are part of this collective effort. Open Food Facts belongs to everyone who contributes to it. Each individual donor, each volunteer, each person sharing their time or resources is a true partner in building this commons for food transparency.

Our funding model reflects our values: we grow through individual donations and grants from public institutions and foundations committed to the common good. This community-based support ensures we remain accountable to citizens, not to corporate interests.

Funding the commons vs. project-by-project funding

Most of our financial support comes in the form of project-specific grants—funding designated for particular developments like our mobile app, environmental or health impact, or advanced search features. While these targeted grants are valuable and allow us to achieve important milestones, they don't cover the day-to-day costs of running a living, growing commons.

The infrastructure that supports millions of users (servers, databases, maintenance, community support…) requires stable, unrestricted funding. This is where individual donations make all the difference. When you donate to Open Food Facts without restrictions, you help us keep the lights on, respond to urgent needs, and invest in the long-term sustainability of this shared resource.

Think of it this way: project grants build new features, but general contributions maintain the foundation. Both are essential, and both make you a valued partner in our mission.

A big thank you to all our partners!

From individual citizens contributing a few euros each month, to foundations supporting ambitious development projects, to public institutions championing transparency—every partner plays a vital role. Together, we're building something that belongs to everyone and serves the common good.
